Service: Math Tutoring

Goal: Have Jasmine finish her math homework and complete other articles of her homework.

Reflection: My goal for this session was to have Jasmine finish her math homework with ease and to work on some other pieces of homework with me. In this session, I did not need to help Jasmine with her math homework because she had done something like it in class. Once I checked it, she had no errors and nothing needed to be corrected. Since we had lots of time left for tutoring, we worked on her vocabulary homework. We had to write a short story using 5 out of 10 vocabulary words. To my surprise, Jasmine was very descriptive in her story. She choice some difficult vocabulary words to work with and tackled them with ease. We also did some reading homework, which was to read a book. She read to me and finished the book just when she had to leave. I had accomplished both goals today!

Community Service Entry #5

Service: Beach Clean-Up

Date: February 2nd, 2013

Time: 30 min.

Goal: To clean up as much garbage as possible, no matter how small the trash is.

Reflection: My goal for this beach clean-up was to clean up as much garbage as possible off the beach, from the trees, and off the parking lot, if there is any there. Unfortunately, I arrived an hour late with a friend, and there was hardly any garbage left to pick up. So, for half an hour, we searched everywhere with keen eyes for garbage. We looked the longest through the brown seaweed that washes up on the beach. We only found a few tiny pieces of garbage. We also looked a lot in the parking lot, where we mostly found smooched beer bottle caps that were covered in sand. We then skimmed through the shore line to see if any garbage would wash up, but none of it did. We finished with a garbage bag that was merely a quarter-way full, but we were happy that we got to help!

Service: Math Tutoring

Date: February 4th, 2013

Goal: Finish Jasmine’s homework without any trouble, or to cover a topic she does not understand and make her understand it completely.

Reflection: My goal for this tutoring session was to complete Jasmine’s homework with no trouble, or, if there was anything to work on, have her understand it completely. Today Jasmine’s homework was on fractions again. It was on knowing which fractions were higher, lower, or equivalent to a half. This is a challenging topic to cover since Jasmine’s grade has not been introduced to multiplication. I was hoping that she would have learned how to solve these problems in class so that her homework would have gone smoothly. However, I had a solution. I showed her the pizza again. I shaded in half of the pizza, and I asked what fraction that was. I told her that is there was a shaded area on a pizza any smaller than that, that it was smaller than a half. But if the shaded area was bigger than that, than it was more than half. Once she understood this concept, her homework finally went smoothly!

Community Service Entry #3

Service: Stephen Dillet Primary School

Date: February 9th, 2013

Time: 2 hours

Goal: Make sure the kids interact and answer as many questions as possible.

Reflection: My goal for this session of Stephen Dillet Primary School was to make sure that the students in my group interact with us and that they are able to answer any questions we ask them. This time around, there were not enough Stephen Dillet students to LCIS students in each group. So, we all split into two separate groups. However, a few students seemed to be friends in our group, and would not stop talking to each other and telling jokes, even after we tried separating them. Once we had them split up, we started to ask questions about the topic, but it seemed as if only the LCIS students answered the questions. None of the Stephen Dillet Students cared to answer any questions. Once every LCIS student was aware that the Stephen Dillet students were not participating, we had Sam and Emma make everybody give an answer to every question they asked, which took long. My goal for this session was and was not accomplished. It was accomplished once we made everybody give an answer, but it was not accomplished because we knew if we did not force the students to answer, they would not have an answer. But after, we all had fun making valentine’s!

Community Service Entry #2

Service: Stephen Dillet Primary School

Date: January 19th, 2013

Time: 2 hours

Goal: Make sure the kids have fun playing a game.

Reflection: My goal for this Stephen Dillet session was to make sure that the kids in my group have fun playing a game together. Since it was my first time back since November, I was hoping that my kids would remember me. I had noticed from previous sessions that my group’s kids were lacking in interest. I thought it would be fun to play some games. However, the problem was finding games that followed the theme of the session. Davina, my group leader, made a word search with synonyms of the session topic. As I completed my word search, I looked up at the Stephen Dillet students. They were seeing if they had found more words than the other student and so on. They were turning it into a competition and laughing along the way. I don’t truly consider word searches as games, but it is fun!

Community Service Entry #1

Service: Math Tutoring

Date: January 28th, 3012

Time: 45 min.

Goal: To teach my student a new and easier technique to solve a problem.

Reflection: My goal for this tutoring session was to introduce a new way of solving a math problem to my student. I hope this technique will make my student, Jasmine, know the answer to questions with the blink of an eye. I noticed that Jasmine was having trouble with shading in the fraction given. So, I told her the technique that I always used to use when I was her age. I drew an eight-piece pizza and asked her to color in the fraction I gave her. Such as:

“Shade in 5/8 of the pizza” She would then shade in 5/8 of the pizza with no problem!

The fraction that she was really stuck on was 3/8. But eventually, after practicing this technique more, she found the answer easily!
